Back Cracking

Back Cracking
My mother reccomended that I position myself over our soft piano bench, and gently lay my back over it, keeping my feet on the ground for leverage and moving slowly down the vertebre. The width of it is approx. the length of my spine, except the lower lumbar area when it tips. Sometimes I will push the floor away with my feet while simultaneously pulling on the piano in front of me with my back completely straight against the bench (except that lower area with the natural curve.) Is this healthy?

Before you mobilize your spine you want your body to know what it will do with the extra mobility. Extra mobility that ends up further arching or rounding your back is counterproductive. Does the surface have the appropriate hardness / softness for you? Is it stable enough to be safe? Are you arching your back as you go over the edge? is your baseline shape respected at all times? Does this make sense for your particular spine? Do you know where you are stuck and where you are hyper-mobile?

I am curious about back cracking. I do massage but I don't crack backs. On occasion the thoracic spine may crack. But I don't make a point of it. I find it interesting that so many therapists actually do back cracking. I was told that the area of the back that may crack easily may not be the acctual spot where the mobility is inhibited. That it may be the vertebrea above or below making the area that is in need of manipulation still stuck. What are your thoughts on back cracking in general?
